People In Need completed construction of bridge in the Ahmadabad district of Paktya. Six communities of Rud Essakhil area were connected to the main access road through the recentl...y completed bridge under the Cash For Work activities funded by ECHO. On the other hand, under the same project approximately more than 190 most vulnerable families of the same areas were also provided temporarily employment opportunities for 44 working days.
Hajee Abdul Qadeer a local elder and deputy of Malikhil CDC (Community Development Council) told PIN that lack of access to the main Sayad Karam – Gardez road was one of their biggest problems especially during winter and flooding seasons. “We were suffering lots of difficulties taking our patients to the provincial capital Gardez. Some times we have lost lives of some of the serious patients due to late arrival to hospital” said Abdul Qadeer.
He further added that school children also couldn’t attend regularly their school that was located on the other side of river, because our own hand made wooden bridge was several times destroyed by floods. Pointing to the newly constructed bridge, Abdul Qadeer said their transportation problems are solved now.
In addition of bridge in Esakhil, PIN has covered about 70 communities in Sayd Karam and Ahmadabad district of Paktya by the said ECHO funded CFW (Cash For Work) and completed about 32 different projects.
The projects included road rehabilitations, Karez (the traditional irrigation/drinking water resources) rehabilitations, protection/retaining walls, skills training etc.
It is pertaining to be mentioned that Pakya is a south-eastern remote province of the country that is badly hit/affected by droughts of recent years as well as floods.
An official of PIN managing the project disclosed that in total 1562 most vulnerable families of the province were directly benefited from CFW activities in SaydaKaram and Ahmdabad districts of Pkatya. While, thousands others indirectly benefitted from the newly created or rehabilitated infrastructures which were left behind the short term CFW project.
It also worth to be mentioned here that PIN tested a deferent new approach for the implementation of CFW projects that was very successful and produced encouraging results i.e. worked on more sustainable projects rather than simply canal cleaning that could be undertaken traditionally by communities themselves.
In addition to the above mentioned CFW intervention, PIN is also a facilitating partner with MRRD (Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development of Afghanistan) and has been facilitating the implementation of NSP (the largest community development program in the history of the country) in 152 rural communities of Paktya since 2005. Under NSP, PIN has completed more 300 subprojects in five districts of the province in various sectors such as transport, irrigation, power supply, water supply, HCD (Human Capital Development) etc.
